Having a problem with a Pyrenees. I bought her as a puppy from someone who had offered to work with her if we needed it, but unfortunately he passed this December. Suddenly after having puppies at the same time the previous owner passed, she is killing chickens. She had been aggressive against the chicken coop when she could not get to the chickens. They have been free ranged for a year and suddenly she killed 6 of 12 (we think) chickens. I don't know if we can train her out of this or if we have to give her a way. Any suggestions would be welcomed!!!!

If it wasn’t easement you could build that soil in that way so you’re off the water table but lowlands are a good grazing point in droughts

Graze it is the answer for wet hay

People are strange, they hate when cows aren’t grazing on grass and are inside “ in terrible conditions “ but when it comes to winter they say what terrible farmers for leaving the cows out in the winter cold, no one can win with those kinds of people.

I don't have a farm, or a dog. Yet am here learning about how to raise a livestock guardian dog. I need help i guess.

Cool story on the Jeep. Being able to do your own repairs saves you in all sorts of ways. Preventative Maintenance is also a big deal because that can head off small problems before they become big problems and can help to extend the life of your machinery and equipment.

I really admire these series of Anyone can farm. They've been an opener to some people who have a narrative that farming is for the poor and unemployed. Actually the world might start starving 20-30 years from now, Agriculture and Agronomics, as well as animal rearing are the world 's next lucrative billion earning businesses in the world. So i understand the no friend's dogs, but what about house dogs?? Obviously they would need trained to be safe near livestock

I'm sad that I might not be able 2 have LDG now, 2 protect my ducks. 😕 Bc my mom is my dog sitter. They go 2 her house during our vacations. 😕 We have friends bring their dogs over bc they can't leave them alone 2 long. 😖🥵😵 & our underground fence goes in the front of the house. 😞 So they can patrol the whole perimeter. i want to address something implied in a couple of messages below. Pasture raising hogs is suggested to get more yield from the property you have. Pasture isn't like corn or bean growing in that you don't have a defined planting season or harvest season and you, the farmer, doesn't have the issues of distributing food or storing what you raised. Is that really true? Is the pasture land you are using capable of making more nutrients if it was planted to corn or beans? What are the expected yields in your area? Raising a hog to 300 lbs. that is heavy for a commercial hog, will take roughly 1000 lbs of feed made of corn and soybeans mixed in a 4:1 ratio. This is for the main commercial breeds: York, Hamp, Duroc, not the settler breeds like the mangalitsa. The rate of gain will be such that the commercial breed hog will reach that weight in 6-7 months. The settler breeds will take 12 moths or more. 1000 lbs of feed is roughly is roughly 16 bushels. Around where I live, the average corn yield is 180 bu and acre. That would be 11-12 hogs raised from the feed raised on one acre. Can pasture feeding produce 12 hogs per acre in a year? Unlikely. We raised commercial hogs on pasture lots feeding a commercial feed we ground and supplied from our own farm. We raised roughly 400 butcher hogs from 40 acres of land year round. We are in Michigan, so pasture forage isn't available at least four months a year. Lastly, hog health is an issue. Hogs collect parasites off of open ground. Our preventive measures included moving the hogs to fresh pasture every two months and only using that area to raise pigs every second year. Even so, we wormed those animals with chemicals every season. Trichinosis is the worse because it depends on a part of its life cycle for being ingested by the pig. It is also one of the most harmful pathogens an animal can pass to human by eating the hog's flesh. Going to concrete floors has for the most part broken that cycle making commercial hogs much safer for catching trichinosis. It is not the only parasite to look out for, Ring worm, round worm and tape worms all have a similar life cycle process and inflict a lot of lost yield in hogs that are infected. Look at all the issues before pursuing pasture raised and fed hogs.

How can you say that anything other than law is just a rule and shouldn't be followed, and that licenses remove rights, yet you'll get a driver's license and register your automobiles after already paying the road tax through the fuel? The issue of government over reach goes far beyond the departments of agriculture. They tax you to oblivion and we have no redress of grievances left. You mention that you want a trial by jury of your peers, that's a joke. Have you ever tried to do that? They can punish you by process. They can deny you a jury. They can inform and instruct the jury to do what they want, yet you must remain silent or be put in jail for contempt. There is no justice. The judge can put you in jail for mentioning their first name.

Is that lard or tallow? Cuz I learned lard is great for baking (vs butter or 50/50 lard/butter) and tallow is for the skin soap and skillet. ??

You mean "plumb" as you go, especially in the beginning. Lots of people get it wrong because a "bubble stick" aka a "level" has several bubbles. One is for level and two are for plumb.

Better butter matters

I am thinking about getting a LGD for my place and holding off until my personal dog (dutch shepherd) gets to be about a year old, I want to go slow and steady instead of reacting to emergencies, we have enough of those. Anyway, my main goal is to protect my pigs (someday goats as well) while also protecting the chickens. The current layout is I have a ~5ac hillside I fenced in with 5' woven sheep and goat fence where the pigs and future goats will live. Then the chickens are in a separate area which is close but outside the pig area. I assumed the LGD needs to be in with the pigs to protect them, or at least be able to get in/out so they can also watch the chickens? How does one let the LGD get into and out of the fence in areas?

My two month old puppy killed some chicks. Any tips?

I raise pigs in Northern Az. Would this grow at a 6000ft high desert environment?

Biochart is so Beneficial to your animals and your plants feed it to your chickens the chickens Eat the biochar They poop it out and you put that poop With other compost like rabbit manure goat manure and you got excellent fertilizer for your crops . The important thing is that this benefits your garden for several years .😊
